RE: Bible contradictions

i understand why you are saying those in the world who read the scriptures as a set of independent verses might see contradictions... .... but when taken as a whole and in context...... .. as the scriptures meant to be studied.... ... not only will we not see contradictions....... but we will see the full lesson Jesus was teaching at each occasion.......
for instance.... luke 6-32 is cut out of a much larger lesson that spans from luke 6-28 through luke 6-36
luke 6 28-36 "bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.........and unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.......give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again........and as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
for if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them........ and if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
and if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again........but love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.....be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful."
in that section of a much larger sermon Jesus was teaching showing mercy to those who have wronged us.. ... and by not refusing to do legitimate business with someone who despises us...... ... thus showing the world we are saved by loving those who hate us.. through treating them with the same grace we would want them to treat us... .........
and john 13-35 cannot be placed in proper context without including the statement which explains it..... john 13-34.... ..
john 13 34-35 "a new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another...... by this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."
the key phrase in that sentence being.... "as I have loved you" ... ... and how does Jesus love us?...... well for one He died for us.... and in the case of the disciples He walked with them daily and taught them..... showed them how they should live as His followers who would bear His name....this is the kind of love Jesus wants His followers to show one another.. ..... like the love one shows for their own family..... a true brotherly love..... or the love a parent shows a child....... ...it;s a stronger kind of love than is described in luke 6-32... ..... .showing love for someone who wishes us ill or who would harm us ..... and which doesn;t go as far as commanding you to die for that person who has wronged you.... just to show them grace and kindness ........ ........
and if we read the entire paragraph beginning with 1st john 5-1 we see the writer is teaching us about showing our faith in God and love of God through obedience to God..... and how those who are saved and truly love God will obey Him and also love others who are saved.......
"whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him...........by this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments........for this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous..........for whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith........who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?"
note however that while this paragraph speaks of showing love through obedience to God, and those who love God as fellow children of God....... the paragraph surrounding luke 6-32 says nothing of showing love to those have wronged you by obeying them.... ...no.... .. you show them love by refusing to retaliate against them.... . but under no circumstances should we believe God would also have us obey someone simply because they wronged us... and we wish them to show them christian love...... ..what if they told us to do something evil or to commit a sin against God?...... ..
so while i agree with you that the argument can be made the love mentioned in all these verses has some similarties...... i do not agree they are all identical..... and when the scriptures surrounding these verses is studied in proper context one can see the kinds of love mentioned in them,.. while in some ways similar..., is also vastly different...... .....but in no way are they also contradictory to one another..... they simply speak of different kinds of love... ..............
like i have always said... and i;m no bible scholar by any means..... ... but in my opinion.... ..... the 13th century theologian who carved up and labelled the scriptures into it;s current chapter and verse form... did us few favors if any at all..... ... and in many regards only served to sow further confusion........
