these are strictly my own top 10 dumbest olympic sports.... the ones i can;t even stand to think about much less watch on tv...... .... please feel to add your picks for dumbest sport if i miss them.... or to even disagree and explain why you like one of the sports i dissed...... ..... but anyway.... here goes......... this will be part one of 2..... and i;ll start with one of the most recent additions to the olympic line up.....
GOLF......
seriously?.......golf?...... the silly knocking around a ball with a stick game that got it;s name from an acronym that was once posted outside mens only establishments that banned women?...... Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden..... but even with that part of it;s history aside.... it;s a ridiculous game to have in the olympics.....
athleticism required?.... ...minimal....
thrill factor?...... only if you like watching paint dry.......
cheering crowd factor? ..... don;t even think about it.... make one peep while this game is being played and angry golfers will throw their clubs at you......
RACE WALKING.....
walking?.... really?...... i mean, thanks for giving people unfamiliar with this event the hopes that even they ..no matter what their physical condition... can be an olympian.... but it;s an illusion... most of the people involved in this "sport" are actually wash outs from other events...... they resorted to this one so they could still have something to do in the olympics..... which means no.... if you have never been involved in any other sport then you have a snow balls chance in the deep fryer of making this one.....
athleticism required? .....actually more than one might think....
thrill factor? .........none at all.... it;s actually embarrassing to watch.... even more embarrassing to get caught while watching it..... it should also be embarrassing to take part in but if you ever see it you will realize the people involved in this event clearly have no shame.... and can not be embarrassed ..... by anything.... .....
cheering crowd factor?...... what crowd?....unless you count the hundreds of judges lining the track ready to whip out red paddles and disqualify anyone who lifts one foot off the ground before the other is firmly planted....
.. i think this is a sport that must have been invented by grade school lunch room monitors..... they probably make up it;s fan base too.....
RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS.... ..
not to be confused with artistic gymnastics which requires intense training...... this sport is little more than dancing around while waving a long ribbon on a stick...... it would be better to have ballet in the olympics.... at least that dance style requires athleticism.... plus it would be a lot more entertaining.....
athleticism required?. ...actually less than one might think.... but you do have to be built like a supermodel.....
thrill factor?..... well... there is always the chance that ribbon will stop moving or come loose from the stick it;s attached to....... but other than that...... .
cheering crowd factor?.... it seems to be mostly friends and family of the contestants.... kinda like a junior miss beauty pageant...... and more crying than cheering... exactly like a junior miss beauty pageant.....
SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING.....
what would happen if a bunch of rhythmic gymnasts all jumped in the pool together and started doing the same thing?... ... that;s it.... you got it.....
athleticism required?......well you have to be able to swim.... upside down.... and also hold your breath for an incredibly long time..... it can be tough i will admit.... but i think it;s more fitting for a vegas casino show... or cirque du soleil.. than the olympics...... i;m sure many will disagree.......
thrill factor?..... every once in a while one of the swimmers appears above water long enough for you to tell who she is..... plus there is always the chance one will choke during the routine and have to be rescued from the pool......
cheering crowd factor?..... most of them keep going back and forth from their seat to somewhere behind the stands.... probably looking for the slot machines that they are certain must be there somewhere......
BADMINTON.....
badminton?.... what were they thinking?....... were they just really bored one year and lacked the initiative to search for a better new sport?...... ...i could almost accept this one being in the olympics if the matches were held in a backyard and the court was surrounded with picnic tables...... barbecue and grilled hot dogs would have to be served to the fans of course.....
athleticism required?..... are you kidding?..... have you seen them?
thrill factor?..... someone did get hit in the face with the shuttlecock the other day.... they said it left a nasty abrasion....
cheering crowd factor?.... was there a crowd?......it was hard to tell with all those eye frying flood lights shining on the court from all directions......blinding the contestants so they got hit in the face with the shuttlecock......... i didn;t hear a crowd though.... so probably not.....

PING PONG
(thats right... i called it ping pong.. ... i refuse to say "table tennis")...
deepest apologies to forest gump..... but ping pong is not an olympic sport....... this is a basement/family room leisure activity for people who can;t afford a pool table...... yes it does require good hand to eye coordination.... but so does darts and pinball..... they might as well add video gaming to the olympics......who knows... maybe a future generation will.......
athleticism required?.... not much.... though players do get super developed thighs from all that jumping side to side.....
thrill factor?....... about the same as badminton and bowling.......
cheering crowd factor?...... again.... like badminton.... it was hard to tell with all those flood lights making anything not illuminated by them impossible to see......
and on a side note.... it makes no more sense to me calling this "sport" "table tennis" than is to call the real game of tennis "parking lot ping pong" .... but again.... many fans of the sport will disagree..... lucky for me they seldom come out of their basements... .....
HAND BALL
no.... not the game played in a closed court where hard rubber balls are whacked against a wall and come back at high velocity to bounce off your head..... .. maybe i;m just slow at figuring this one out...... but the merits of olympic handball are lost on me....... ...it;s played on what looks like a miniature basketball court with a soccer goal at each end... and it;s played with a ball....... only unlike basket ball the ball is not bounced off the floor....(well...not more than once or twice).... and unlike soccer it;s not kicked with the feet..... it;s all handled with the hands..... like in water polo.... except there is no water.......
athleticism required?....... a lot less than water polo..... probably less than basketball too..... seems like another one of those sports for people who failed at other sports.....
thrill factor?....... ??????????
cheering crowd factor?...... well... there was a crowd..... and they were cheering...... sort of...... but i could;t figure out why......
CURLING ---->my only entry to this list from the winter olympics...
my question has always been just what in the world is curling?....... sliding a stew pot across the ice while sweeping vigorously with a broom and a scrub brush?....... it is absolutely without equal the most boring event to watch at the winter olympics..... which isn;t really saying a lot when you consider the exciting nature of most winter olympic sports....... but curling would be the most boring event at the summer olympics too...... if they ever moved it there.. .... and provided they don;t introduce dominoes......
athleticism required?..... what?.... even the curlers are too ashamed to claim that one........ i guess you do have to be able to move quickly on the ice without slipping and falling on your backside...... something anyone living north of the 38th parallel has down to a science within the first 2 weeks of winter...... and then there;s that broom and scrub brush..... it must be difficult to master coz i haven;t seen one of them yet on the business on that broom or brush that could put the average hotel cleaning lady in fear of losing her job..... nor even compete with the average high schooler with a broom on after school detention who was told to sweep the hallways before going home......
thrill factor? ....slightly less thrilling than watching a game of dominoes..... and a lot less enjoyable that watching a group of 6 year olds play go fish...... less chance of witnessing a sports injury too....
cheering crowd factor? ...... the one time i saw it the crowd was even more quiet than the one watching a golf tournament...... the only difference was that the golf tournament crowd was actually there...... maybe the curling fans got lost and ended up at some other venue... .... .i don;t know.... but it didn;t appear as if the contestants would have noticed either way...... they were totally into this sliding of the stew pot across the ice.... while vigorously sweeping and scrubbing with their brushes and brooms...... .... ... and we quietly made our exit and left them to it.......
AIR RIFLE -------> or to those of us who didn;t live sheltered childhoods..... BB GUN......
i can actually imagine the ancient greeks whose inspiration for many of the olympic events came from skills required for lethal warfare rolling over in their graves because of this one....... ... now if we were talking about actual rifle shooting and pistol shooting with real guns.... or trap and skeet with a real shotgun...(like the already have in the olympics)...... then i would say absolutely... .... and combining rifle marksmanship with cross country skiing like they do in the winter olympics?..... super kewl....... but BB GUN?.......
i;m waiting for off road roller skating or freestyle skate board to make it;s appearance so they can make a new combination event..... a contestant goes through a laid out course of half pipes and hand rail obstacles with a bb gun strapped to his back then stops at stations along the way and shoots empty soda cans off a fence from various distances....... ..i know some kids in my neighborhood that would beg to be signed up right now...... and they would be hard to beat at it too.......
athleticism required?..... a steady hand with good hand to eye coordination for certain..... good control of breathing with the ability to detect your own heart beat and discharge your shooting piece between the beats..... ok.....so maybe this does require a little more skill than i;m giving it credit for..... but does that make it worthy of being an olympic sport?...... it;s a bb gun for crying out loud...... what;s next?.... sling shot?......... actually sling shot requires more skill....
thrill factor?.... if you get a thrill out of seeing aspirin tablets turned to dust on a peg board then yeah.... this is your spectator sport.......
cheering crowd factor?..... again... this is one where the crowd appears to be friends and family mostly....... which would be fine if the athletes were all kids still in the preteen years..... but it;s not.... these are adults shooting these bb guns..... and i was slightly embarrassed for them..... even if they weren;t embarrassed for themselves........
DRESSAGE
this one was actually hard to list..... because i actually love dressage.... it;s a part of the opening ceremony at all rejoneadores style bull fighting events which i am huge fan of..... and i genuinely love seeing rare and prohibitively expensive horses in their peak form... trained by equally expensive horse trainers.... decked in finery and going through a set of paces and poses ridden by a competent horseman.... or horsewoman.... .but should it be an olympic event?...... to me... as beautiful as it is... the dressage competition appears to be a contest of who had the most money to spend.....
.. and whose horse has the best genetic make up.....
.... granted the rider has to direct and guide their horse through those paces and poses..... but still...... it;s nothing like steeple chase or jumping events where your life and your riding skills become inseparably joined for a brief few minutes...... ... i don;t know.... i;m still feeling bad about not wanting this to be an olympic event...... but.... there it is....
athleticism required?.... absolutely none..... just good horsemanship skills.... ..oh yeah.... and a very good horse....
thrill factor?.... ..it;s definitely in the eye of the beholder..... i like it.. when it;s the opening act before a bull fight..... but in the olympics?..... .. but i have a feeling the biggest thrills concerned with this sport go to those who actually own the horses involved..... they are probably elated..... but otherwise......
cheering crowd factor?.... another one where the majority of the crowd is family and friends of the horse owners.... with a few who showed but early to see the steeplechase mixed in.....
so anyway........ those are my top 10........ what;s your top 10 dumbest olympic sports?......... -

Jousting!!!!!! They need to add it on. It keeps getting turned down because not enough people engage in this sport. But a ton of people, including me, would watch if they televised it. -

jousting would be awesome!.... a few years ago the history channel had show called full metal jousting....
i loved it ... it;s one of the few reality competition type shows i ever got interesting in..... and was
hoping it was going to be a yearly series.... but then they cancelled the second season and never
renewed it..... i was very disappointed... coz it was an awesome show....
i have always thought it would be kewl if the olympics had a primitive or medieval style pentathlon.....
they have a modern pentathlon but it;s pretty tame compared to what the one in ancient greece was like......
...... but a primitive or medieval one could have jousting as one of the 5 events....
. plus english longbow
... broadsword...
maybe a rough terrain running event over rocks and mountains fully armored.... and an open
rough water swim carrying all your primitive gear...... who ever won something like that would definitely qualify as an
all around medieval warrior/athlete ...

well..... as if those 10 were not bad enough....... the numbskulls that gave those sports travesties validation in the olympic games have completely outdone themselves....... ... the international olympic committee has announced it will introduce CHEERLEADING as a provisional olympic sport with the possibility it could become a permanent part of the olympics after review...... ....

Badminton: would be much more interesting if they played it like we used to: Killer Badminton involves a team of players and more than one shuttlecock. The number of shuttlecocks is directly proportionate to the number of players on each side. Take it from me...it can be quite the athletic event!
Curling: Hey, I love curling!
Air Rifle: They should shoot live game like my son does. He's deadly with doves, and he gets to eat his kill!
Dressage: I have to somewhat disagree with you about dressage. I do agree that the whole picture of the horse and the rider is a huge part of the judging process. In fact, the whole point of dressage is to show seamless (invisible) communication between the horse and the rider. But the rider is actually guiding the horse through each movement. It takes great muscle control (from the rider) and great training (of the horse) to make those perfect movements. When it's done right, it appears as though the horse and rider are of one mind. I used to ride dressage. Yes, it's more athletic than it looks. -

don;t get me wrong.... i do love dressage.... especially when it;s performed prior to the event that it leads into in the arena..... rejoneador-rejoneadora style bull fighting..... ... (the fact that i;m a fan of that and watch it live streamed online is something my liberal friends have to constantly forgive me for).....
.. ...that style of bull fighting was oringally developed as a way of training cavalry horses and soldiers for warfare..... which is in truth the reason and origin of many olympic sports.... .. training for war..... ....
i;ll reconsider dressage after what you said about it.... ...and especially since you said you use to ride dressage yourself.... ..... i really do love watching it..... .. but i also thought i might be the only one who did.....
i would love it if REJONEADORA STYLE BULL FIGHTING became an olymic sport and was a part of the equestrian events ..... like you said with dressage it requires great musclular control of the rider and a seamless partnership between rider and horse working as one....... ..and it could also be done in a non-lethal way just like the other combat based olympic sports are..... .. the thrill and cheering crowd factors would be off the charts and both bull and bullfighter could live to compete another day....... and since bulls have a remarkable memory and learning curve.... (as many rodeo riders have often discovered to their dismay, when they attempted to ride the same bull more than once....
.... ) ... the competition would become even more intense as the same bulls entered the arena time after time and faced off with some of the same horses and riders. ......
it would not be a sport without dangers though..... ....the risk of death would always be there..... but then it;s always there in events like luge and downhill skiiing too..... .... (even chearleading can be fatal if a competitors team members fail to catch her and she lands on her head....

KILLER BADMINTON does sound like an interesting event..... even sounds like something a helmet and eye protection might be appropriate for......

well.. it seems as if someone was paying attention to what i wrote on this subject 2 years ago..... ... because SKATEBOARDING has been officially accepted as new olympic sport for 2020
in tokyo.......

do i think it;s dumb?....... well that depends..... if it;s nothing but half pipe, stairs, and hand rail skills then yes... ..i think it;s absolutely stupid...
.... but if they do what i suggested before and introduce a biathalon style combination sport like SKATEBOARD/BB-GUN or even SKATEBOARD/SLINGSHOT where a competitor is required to negotiate a hazardous obstacle course incorporating the above mentioned skills and then some........ (like maybe a frogger style freeway crossing on skateboard)....... .. then stop at various stations to shoot tin can size targets off a rail 10 to 20 yards away... .. or even shoot a slingshot at moving targets while also in motion himself. ..... .....then this new addition to the olympics could have real possiblities...... ... .... .. and might even help teach survival skills usefull in a future zombie apocalypse.. .... 
on a side note they also decided to introduce SURFING as an olympic sport...... as well as CLIMBING
CLIMBING i can agree with..... as it is definitely a sport that requires skill and with modern climbing walls it will be easy to create a course that puts all competitors on equal footing.....it would also most likely be a timed event where a judges opinion played no part in the the outcome..... ...
but as much as i love SURFING ...and as difficult as it is to do.... ..i think it might be a problem for the olympics.... ... real surfing involves riding ocean waves... which are extremely unpredictable... and where the opinions of human judges.... (in the absence of a wipeout).... totally determine the outcome of the event .... ........it;s what i hate most about the gymnastics events and figure skating... ...... who does best and gets the highest score depends on who is looking.... .. and who is sitting on the judges panel.....
but..... that being said... i realize they will probably hold the surfing competition in a concrete water park style wave pool..... .where waves are artificially generated... ..are designed to be a certain size and shape..... and where competitors won;t have to actually judge for themselves the characteristics of an incoming swell before they commit themselves to trying to catch the breaking wave it will produce, once it hits the reef....... ........
to me.... riding machine generated ripples in a concrete pool is not surfing....... ...but we will see....... maybe they will surprise us.... come to hawaii.... and schedule the summer olympic surfing event at a place like waimea ....... or makaha.. .... .. .that would be something to see....
